My parents invited me and my fiancé to join them on the Copper Spike Train Excursion this past weekend which is owned by Arizona Eastern Railway. I was wowed by the size of the locomotive and that was the extent of my excitement. My father purchased the tickets over the phone and was not given a confirmation number. He called back the day of the trip to get it. He was told to get there by 10:30 am. The whole place does not open until 11:00 am and the train does not depart until 11:30 am. The westward trip out was a mile long and we only saw run down houses throughout Globe. The train crept at 15 mph. We then backed up the way we just came to see all the same run down houses. They only take you out that way first to add time to the ride so you feel you spent your money wisely. Then you pass the station where you boarded and get to see more of Globe’s ghetto. Once you leave town it starts to look somewhat decent, but then you see you are just following the 77/70 highway. Finally at 1:30 pm, you reach the Apache Gold Casino. You have the option of getting off the train and going to the casino or just take the train back to the station. We chose the casino. Bad idea. The train does not come back until 4:00 pm. Good idea if it was a casino worth going anywhere near it. I’ll just say it would have been nice to have someone warn us that backpacks and cameras are not allowed in the casino. My final opinion is that I wouldn’t recommend this train ride for AZ locals. It you want to wow out-of-towners go for it.
